Program Spotlight

Skatepark in the News
On December 21st, 2003 the Boston Sunday Globe City Weekly section featured an article about the December 15th skatepark design public meeting. If you would like to receive a copy of this or other Charles River Skatepark articles, email crc@thecharles.org with your name and mailing address.

Skatepark Update
Zach Wormhoudt has begun to conceptualize the design of the skatepark with the information he gathered at the December 15th public meeting and the site analysis he conducted while he was in town. He will bring these ideas to the next public meeting (date and location to be announced), and work again with local skaters and riders to advance the design toward its final layout.

We are pleased to announce the involvement of former Lieutenant Governor Tom O'Neill III who volunteered to assist the CRC with skatepark planning and fundraising efforts.

Annual Appeal

Thank you to everyone who donated to the Charles River Conservancy's Annual Appeal. Your numerous and generous contributions help us to continue our efforts in the much needed stewardship and renewal of the parklands. Thank you also for the many nice personal notes. If you have not yet taken the time to give, please do so - even a small gift makes a difference and helps us achieve more for the parklands. You can give by check, credit card or on line. Advocacy

Graffiti
Many thanks to everyone who responded to the Graffiti survey! 6% of you think graffiti along the Charles is art, while 32% of you strongly dislike it. As for replacing the graffiti, the results were mixed; 19% wanted the graffiti removed, 28% suggested painting over and 26% liked the idea of murals. For more details, click on Graffiti Survey Results.

Conservancy Volunteers

IIt's tree pruning time! From now until March, the Conservancy Volunteers will be pruning trees along the river. Come learn the art of pruning. No experience is necessary. For a list of upcoming events, visit the Conservancy's Volunteer Stewardship Program page. You can also set up a service day for your company or community group by calling volunteer coordinator, Britt Lundgren at the CRC or email bml@thecharles.org.

Inventing the Charles River

The first 5,000 copies sold in less than a year and a second printing of Inventing the Charles River by Karl Haglund has now reached bookstores. This 500 page book, published by the MIT Press in collaboration with the CRC, includes over 450 illustrations and is a great way to pass the time during the cold winter weather. For more information click on Inventing the Charles River.

Renata von Tscharner with Matthew Amorello, Mass Pike ChairmanPicture of the Month

The Charles River Conservancy is working with Eye Candy Cinema to create a documentary about the skatepark. In a recent video interview with Mass Turnpike Authority Chairman Matthew Amorello, he reiterated his enthusiasm for the skatepark and the Turnpike Authority's commitment to provide a contribution of site preparation and infrastructure to this public/private partnership. This picture of the month of Mr. Amorello and CRC president Renata von Tscharner was taken during filming.

If you have a picture you'd like to submit for a future picture of the month, please contact us at crc@thecharles.org.
